Optimizing Netbook for better performance

I’ve been using my Samsung Netbook for about a week now.  I’m actually pleasantly surprised how useful it’s been.  I expected it to be slow and cumbersome and that I would have to endure some annoyances that comes with compromising power and speed for portability and price.  Overall it has been a good experience except a few for when it lags a little bit; mainly when I’m typing and when I’m watching videos.  So to remedy the lag and choppiness  I increased the performance of the Netbook which seemed to do the trick.

I changed the power settings for the processor and video performance as well as activated the “speed mode”. This seemed to do the trick.  I know that I am trading battery life for better performance which I’m OK with.  If I’m traveling and need maximum battery life, I’ll just change my netbook to use the “battery savings” mode.

To change the power settings:

  1. Right click on the battery icon, click on Power Options
  2. Beside the Samsung Optimised plan click on the “Change plan settings” link.
  3. Click on the “Change advanced power settings” link.
  4. Expand “Processor power management” -> “Maximum processor state” and change it to 100% on battery.
  5. Expand “Multimedia Settings” -> “Video Playback” and change the settings to “Optimized for Video Playback”

To turn on the “Speed Mode”:

  1. Make the program that you want to use speed mode on active (in my case it was Firefox.
  2. Press “fn” + “F8″

Boot Problem Error pxe-e61 and pxe-m0f

So I just received my Samsung N210 from the UPS man.  I started getting it all set up.  Crapware removed; check.  Installed my programs; check.  I ran Windows updates.  Everything seemed to be running smoothly.

I rebooted the netbook.  During the boot process I get this error:

pxe-e61 : media test failure, check cable
pxe – m0f : exiting pxe rom.

And then just a blinking cursor.  Rebooted into the bios settings.  Changed a few things around.  Rebooted … nothing seems to get it passed that point.

I was able to get into the Samsung recovery program.  Tried the basic recovery.  Nothing.  Then tried the full recovery, which wiped out all of the customizing that I had completed on the netbook.  Again.  Nothing.  Still stuck with the same error.

From my research online for that error code, things seem to be pointing to a bad hard drive.  But that didn’t make sense since the Windows recoveries that I ran completed without any errors.

A little more digging and it seems like Samsung’s Hyperspace was the culprit.  Somehow the Hyperspace was corrupted.  When the netbook tried to boot into Hyperspace … there was nothing there to boot into thus making it think that there was no hard drive.

To fix this, just reset the bios to it’s original default settings.

  1. Reboot the netbook
  2. Press ‘F2″ while its booting to get into the bios
  3. Select the “reset to default” settings
  4. Save & reboot

If I had known this and not ran the full restore, I would not have lost all of the time spent setting up the netbook.  Samsung’s Hyperspace … good idea … bad execution … even worse testing before releasing.

FYI.  To prevent this from happening again, first thing that you should do as soon as you turn on your Samsung netbook with hyperspace … update your bios.  I learned my lesson!

Although more known for laptops and PCs, the well recognized tech brand recently launched their smartphone, the “lePhone,” and now wishes to capitalize on the ever-growing interest in the tablet market.  Other manufacturers are preparing to launch their version of a tablet running either Android, Windows 7, Chrome OS, or even WebOS later this year or next.  Stay tuned for more details.
